Brewing Success in Marion: How the GEM Program Empowered Mica Town Brewing
Starting a new business requires more than just a great idea; it takes community support, practical education, and financial backing. For Emily Causey and Jason Snyder, owners of Mica Town Brewing, turning their passion into a thriving local hub was made possible through the Growing Entrepreneurs Marion (GEM) program.
As first-time business owners, Causey and Snyder reached out to the City of Marion, the Marion Business Association, and the McDowell Chamber of Commerce for guidance. All three organizations pointed them toward the GEM program, setting them on a structured path to success.
The Value of the GEM Program
Participating in the program in February 2017 provided the foundational knowledge and networking the new brewery needed. The curriculum connected them directly with local experts in crucial fields like marketing, insurance, and law.
"The structure of the class focuses on important topics every business must think about," the owners shared. "These relationships along with the ones made with the other local business owners in the GEM program made this class invaluable".
From Planning to Pouring
Following the completion of the GEM classes, the drafting of their business plan, and their official opening, Mica Town Brewing qualified for a $5,000 grant. This funding was specifically allocated to assist with rent and utility costs during their critical launch phase.
"This grant gave us a safety net as we figured out our new business revenue flow," Causey and Snyder noted.
A Growing Community Hub
Today, the brewery operates with a deeply localized mission: to "honor the heritage of Appalachian mining by carefully crafting beer inspired by the geology and hardworking people of Western North Carolina".
Thanks to the resources and support provided by the GEM program, Mica Town Brewing has been able to fulfill this mission while expanding its team to include two full-time and five part-time employees.
As strong advocates for local economic development, the owners hope to see Marion continue to flourish, emphasizing their firm support for the GEM program's vital work in bringing and nurturing new businesses in the community.
