The Joseph McDowell Historical Catawba Greenway is the primary greenway system located in Marion, North Carolina. This highly rated, family-friendly trail system follows the scenic Catawba River corridor, offering a blend of recreation and local history.

Enjoy stunning views and breathtaking waterfalls, as well as treks through lush Appalachian forests and alongside clear mountain streams. From family-friendly greenways and easy, well-trod paths to strenuous backcountry trails, there’s a hiking adventure perfect for every Blue Ridge traveler.

Located in Burke and McDowell counties 50 miles northeast of Asheville, Lake James State Park includes two areas to access this picturesque lake that is perfect for boating, swimming, and fishing. Campsites at both Catawba River and Paddy's Creek accesses provide an opportunity to spend the night by the lake, with some sites accessible only by paddling. Trails include bike trails at Paddy's Creek, the kid-friendly Holly Discovery Trail, the historic Overmountain Victory Trail, and the Fonta Flora State Trail.

The MTA hiking program invites all ages to join monthly hikes and track progress with a hiking passport, which is stamped after each hike. Participants earn rewards based on a tiered system of 3, 6, 9, and 12 hikes. Those completing all 12 hikes in a year receive a program t-shirt as the final prize.

Murder Mountain Run is a diverse and sometimes challenging ride, offering something for everyone. It starts and finishes at the Skyline Village Inn located right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Most of the ride is either scenic byways with excellent views or peaceful country roads. Expect no or low commercial traffic on most of these roads.
